Family business with Luigi and Gian

Family business with Luigi and Gian

It all began at Christmas, 2004. A deli, modest in scale, a humble five tables, with one or two hot dishes prepared at home and carried carefully into the restaurant each day. The premise was simple: a daily, rotating menu. That hasn’t changed. What has endured, above all else, is the familiarity, found not in the dishes themselves, but in the people who serve them.

Today when you step into the family home, the walls tell their own story, lovingly lined with family photographs, moments held onto rather than framed for show. It’s a space shaped over decades, where family has remained the constant for more than 20 years. A true sense of familiarity that has been well earned. People return, not just for the food, but for the feeling of being known, sitting down in ‘their usual’ seat and leaving the rest, confidently, to Luigi.

He calls himself an Italian family man, almost in passing, but it’s evident in everything he does. There’s a generosity to him that can’t be taught, an instinctive warmth that scoops you up and invites you to settle in. Service doesn’t feel like service here, instead you admire the art of hosting, like you’ve arrived somewhere you were always expected.

Before the week begins you see Gian and Luigi, side by side, writing the menu. It’s unhurried, considered, something closer to a ritual than a task. Inevitably when the room later fills with that familiar rhythm of conversation, glasses meeting, laughter rising there’s a subtle feeling of it all just slotting into place perfectly.

When we asked Gian about working with family, his answer is simple, almost understated: “We work as a team. Everyone has their strengths, their weaknesses… no matter the day, someone steps in.” And you see it in how they move around one another, shifting roles without pause or instruction. It’s a fluid and intuitive choreography that feels almost inherited.

That same sense of continuity, of something passed down, refined, and quietly protected finds a natural parallel in the Barbour Heritage Plus Endurance collection. Founded in 1894 in South Shields, Barbour remains, over a century later, a family business at its core, now in its fifth generation. There’s a shared language here: of resilience, of trust, of things made to last.

The Endurance collection carries that forward with the kind of quiet confidence that comes from knowing exactly where you stand and enjoying it.
